Who Can Use This Knowledge?

  • Anyone who is using MBTI® in business and who is looking for further knowledge.
  • External Coaches and trainers who are working with clients to raise business performance.
  • Professional coaches or trainers working within organizations.
  • Internal and external Career Counsellors.

“By taking the Lens approach within PUMA we were able to strive to recognize and type behavior, not people. By using this methodology we removed the possibility of an MBTI® result taking precedence over the individuals' self assessment, reduced "labelling" and as such did not violate the principle of Preferences.

The Lens approach has numerous business applications ranging from sales, conflict management, team building to managing internal project teams.  If you are a Type Practitioner and want to work within a company this approach is for you.”

Chris Loughlin: Global Retail Training Manager

What are the Cognitive Processes (sometimes called Function-Attitudes)?

  • Katherine Briggs and Isobel Briggs Myers developed the MBTI® to try to obtain simpler access to Jung’s theory of function-attitudes.
  • Carl Jung’s described “typical habits of the mind” - similar patterns of behaviour that explained how individuals take in (perceive) information and make decisions (judge).
  • He described eight Cognitive Processes. Psychological Type can be defined as an inbuilt pattern of information-gathering and decision-making processes.
  • Type represents the cognitive lens: what information we naturally perceive and what criteria we innately use to make decisions.

Why use Cognitive Processes

Knowledge of the function-attitudes can enhance the application of type in the following way:

  • Cognitive processes helps us to understand What data we perceive and What criteria we use to make sense of our world.
  • By highlighting that individuals can potentially access all eight function-attitudes, it overcomes the objection about “being put in a box”.
  • Knowledge of these ideas enables leaders to be more creative and solve problems more effectively by exploring all data and considering all criteria before making a decision.

What is Temperament?

  •  Temperament represents a pattern of needs, values, talents and behaviors described for 25 centuries.
  • Temperament is a separate and complementary theory to type.
  • Temperament was described and integrated with psychological type by David Keirsey popularized in the book “Please Understand Me” and further refined by Linda Berens.

Why use Temperament?

Knowledge of temperament adds the following value above and beyond understanding type:

  • Helps to understand WHY people do what they do: gets to the driving forces behind some of the behaviors.
  • Enables leaders to motivate team members more effectively by helping individuals get their core needs met.
  • Contributes to better person-position job fit in their teams so that job roles are more geared to an individual’s innate talents.
  • Provides additional resources to manage stress.
  • Can be used to reduce interpersonal conflict.
  • Easier to remember as it uses words rather than “letters”.

What is Interaction Style?

  • Interaction Style describes a Psycho-physiological energy, correlated with specific aims, beliefs, talents and behaviors, that influences HOW individuals interact with others.
  • The theory was initiated by William Marston in “Emotions of Normal People” and updated and integrated with psychological type in business by Linda Berens.
  • Interaction Style is a separate and complementary theory to type.

Why use Interaction Style?

Knowledge of Interaction Style adds the following value above and beyond understanding type:

  • Helps to reduce conflict by learning to use the correct style for the conflict situation.
  • Increases the ability to build rapport by flexing style to meet the natural pace and energy of the other person.
  • Raises influencing effectiveness by adjusting verbal delivery and body language to match those of the other person.
  • Increased sales and service effectiveness by increased ease in recognizing the customer’s style.
  • Easier to remember as it uses words rather than “letters”.
